A lot of signs point toward a negative result. We are in a run of poor form struggling to score and a multitude of injuries leave few options. No Ramsey, Koscielny, Kolasinac, Monreal, or Giroud. Ozil a doubt and Wilshere in clear need of a rest. Our bench will look scary indeed. I have little faith we can pull another rabbit out of the hat performance against Chelsea a la the FA Cup. I would take a point right now. Its seems like that is what we a reduced to at this point. If we lose here a gap begins to open on even achieving the top four. Get battered and the pressure on us will increase exponentially.

We look up for it, which is a pleasant surprise in and of itself. The attack looks good and Chelsea have looked a little static, Courtois saving their ass on a couple of occasions.

Of course, Arsenal are at their most vulnerable when their defenders have the ball. I'd rather give Hazard the ball ten times than see our defender swith the ball at their foot looking around in desperation. Mustafi is an all action wrecking ball as usual, Chambers needs to really put his foot in on 50-50 and then make the simple pass, instead of tippy-tapping on the 50-50s then putting his foot through the pass.

0-0. The just scoreline is probably 1-1, given the incredible saves Courtois made and the incredible misses Chelsea made after the incredible gifts we handwrapped them. Not very polite, are they?

Every single game, without fail, defensive disaster. It almost reminds me of 2006.

I don’t watch many Arsenal games these days - the experience is almost as painful as listening to excuses from Arsene apologists. However watching the first half was a wonderful advert for football!

Arsenal are dictating the pace of the game but Chelsea are well in the game - first goal probably from a bit of excellence from one of our players or an expected mistake from us could seal it! Just look at all the little mistakes lapses from us all over the pitch. Can the game continue at this pace? If so we could win!

We play like this and lose would be a shame but hey the effort is there - keep it up!

45-60. Apart from the Liverpool game, we really don't seem to do too much in this timeframe. One great chance for Lacazette, but he was as unclinical as Ozil on a bad day there.

That said, we have nobody to bring off the bench. Coquelin if we're winning, Welbeck if we're losing, but Ospina is probably more useful in attack than Welbeck at the moment, who's totally gone off the boil after injury. Oh, Theo Walcott...

Alright, the 60 is up! Jack fucking Wilshere!

Fantastic work from Ozil before that, and what a finish this time from Jack. Just fucking hit it with conviction.

Granit fucking Xhaka can't handle playing football when there's opposition defenders on the field, once again, gives away a clean 1v1. Chambers lost out, but worked really really hard to put pressure on Morata (who, if I was a Chelsea fan, I would be absolutely furious about - Danny Welbeck levels!)

Just got to keep calm and play like we were doing, in terms of attack anyway - but worryingly it seems like legs are slowing down and we're spending too much time standing and watching.

Danny Welbeck comes on. No more attacks for us, then. (Prove me wrong. )

No excuses there. No energy, no movement, after the penalty. Maitland-Niles should be taking the other four defenders and giving them a good telling off, because the 20 year old did his job all game and he's been let down.

Mustafi, Xhaka, Lucas, Elneny - almost all of our signings since Mesut Ozil have been substandard, and to boot we've failed to capitalise on talents like Bellerin.

Theo Walcott and Danny Welbeck on the field now, we might as well burn some incense and do the rain dance.

Well, alright then.

Why didn't you tell us you can shoot, Hector?!

and god bless Morata, the worst striker I've seen in some time (at least today).

They must be missing Diego Costa.

Jesus fing Christ - Morata is bloody shit - he deserves a kicking from his team mates! They should have Won it at the death!

Super game could have gone either way. It’s just a shame that we don’t play with this level of enthusiasm say 70% of the games. But then again we just can’t expect that from an Arsene side.

Cech has faced 15 penalties at Arsenal and saved ZERO while diving the wrong way on 12. How can anyone be this bad?

The answer, based on facts, is that it is definitely subpar, but it's not unbelievably bad, and that it's really the least of our problems. I posted somewhere else:

Quote:
A quick skim of statistical research shows expected saves ranging from 15 to 25%, depending on sample and context. So you'd expect Cech to save 2 or 3 of those 14. That means he's performing poorly, not some freak of nature incredible unheard of awful. Replacing him with a keeper who can save at a normal rate would win us, what, a goal a year, give or take? Not really significant for anything.

However, looking at EPL season-by-season shows us that Cech is arguably the worst penalty saver in the league at the moment. It's hard to say because it is such a small sample for each keeper; Bravo has 100% in 16-17 (ref. transfermarkt), but he only ever faced one penalty. Cech is uniquely bad in facing 9 and saving 0; more typical is Fabianski, who faced 8 and saved 2. But Courtois, De Gea and Lloris, none of whom saved any penalties, faced only a couple each. It's impossible to say how many they would have saved, if they faced 9 like Cech. There are also keepers like David Marshall, who got 0/7. In 15-16, Cech actually is only 0/1, so this puts him in the company of over a dozen other EPL keepers.

In short:
(1) Yes, Cech is performing well below expected average, even taking into account the small and unreliable sample.
(2) Ultimately, this has cost us about 2 or 3 goals over the last 3 years. Every goal counts, for sure, but that's really not a huge number - it's not like Cech would have stopped 10 of those penalties (if he did, now *that* would be unbelievable).

I've never been convinced that buying Cech and ultimately selling Szczsney was a smart move, but today, for example, I'm very happy with the saves he made, and not so fussed about the penalty he conceded. The real problem lies with a defence more leaky than Boris JOh
