They also changed the structure of music.
Combining eastern and western music structures like never before.
Also they used western music constructs that had been abandoned some time before.

In short music would not be anything like it is today without them.
If you like any guitar based band who have been around since then you have to respect the fact those bands would not be the same without The Beatles.

Not just guitar based bands.
Listen to Tomorrow Never Knows or Strawberry Fields, and tell me that bands like the Chemical Brothers have never ripped that off.

Very true!
Was you trying to not generalise as much as possible.

The Beatles Revolver is obviously a massive influence on The Chemical Brothers Surrender.

Im sorry but you have named some of my favourite bands in that list.I agree with you about reality show crap.

Beatles - everytime I hear anything by this lot I want to emulate a Jan Zelezny throw with my radio. Whatever any argument for changing a musical landscape, using different techniques etc - the essence of music is in the listening and it is unpalatable to me. I also find some of their tunes ridiculous.

Nirvana - grunge-lite. Brought the scene to a wider audience, but doesn't have the long lasting appeal (to me anyway) of the other notable grunge bands who weren't necessarily aimed at mass public consumption. Also find Cobain's vocals tedious, and few of the riffs catch me in the same way as efforts from a Mother Love Bone/Pearl Jam, or some of the shit-hot stuff produced by Alice In Chains. I enjoy nearly all of the well-known (and often lesser-known) bands, but Nirvana and The Screaming Trees don't do it for me.

Coldplay - appreciate the melodic nature of some of the material, but tracks like Yellow leave me stone cold. There is one Coldplay track I like (can't remember which) but everything else they've released as a single I detest.

Stereophonics - totally bland band. The only track I like, Dakota, seems to be the one most hated by all the fans that I know. Horribly depressing music.

Also, thanks to someone on this thread, I remembered just how much I dislike U2. "Un, dos, tres, quatorze....hello hello, we're in a place called Vertigo".......aaaaarrrrggghh!!

Pantera, Metallica, Guns n Roses, Motley Crue, Rammstein, Megadeth, Muse, Motorhead, Nirvana, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden - pretty much revolves around that lot although I have been listening to the odd song / album here and there (Danzig's Twist of Cane, Mercyful Fate, Led Zeppellin II and Queensryche's Operation Mindcrime are a few others).

It wouldn't surprise me, the Chems have 'previous' on that score. Next time anyone listens to 'Block Rockin' Beats', check out a track called 'Coup', by a late 70's/early 80's band named 23 Skidoo. The Chems never credited 23 Skidoo, and basically ripped the intro to Block Rockin' Beats.

Very much a 'marmite' band, can easily see why they don't appeal to some people. I love the fact they are so off-the-wall though, nothing I've ever heard comes close to the style that SOAD have created. Unique band in an age where innovation is rare.

I do defy anyone, however, not to listen to Cigaro for the second time and smile. (the first time being a state of bewilderment at the 2mins 50secs of musical carnage that has just ensued).

One thing which has annoyed my about this band, though, is the increasing use of Daron Malakian as lead vocalist. Or, to those not familar with names, the really weak, shrill and tinny one. Works well on a couple of tunes, such as Lost In Hollywood, but he doesn't have the voice to be a lead vocalist, just shouldn't happen. Particularly when you have the incredible vocal talents of Serj Tankian; power and control.

Danzig's Twist of Cane

I have a few bits and pieces from Danzig, Serpentia is such a great tune.

----------------------------

As for me lately:

System Of A Down - Hypnotize. The full album, not the song. Had a load of trouble playing this on my pc and didn't get a chance to listen to it for over a year. But its been on repeat on my portable for the past few days.

The Clash - London Calling

Roots Manuva - Witness The Fitness

Basically throughout the year, I will listen to four artists non-stop.
The Beatles, Dylan, Nirvana and Elliott Smith.
Then I'll throw in other acts to freshen things up.
This is other than the fact that I love the music, wanting to be a proffesional musican, I look to what I have listened to growing up.

Regarding the Beatles, I totally understand people not liking them, especially when they are jammed down the throats of the public, though I think people talk more about them instead of actually listening to the music, and then talking about the music.

Dylan I absolutely love. My 2nd gig was to see him at Wembley about 8 years ago. I was blown away. Luckily I caught him on a night when he was on form.
You know that feeling when you first go to a footy match and your eyes see the pitch for the first time. Illuminating and teasing you. I was late to that gig, and arrived just as he was singing "Tangled up in Blue", and that is exactly what I felt. Never looked back.

Nirvana I got into very late. But I love everything about how the band works. I love the slightly poppy element to their stuf. The lyrics, sound everything.

Elliott Smith I got into because of the film "The Royal Tennembaums", his song "Needle in the Hay" was in it was one of those life changin moments, as when I heard Lennon's "Instant Karma" for the first time. Everything about his music is sad yet uplifting at the same time.

Most of my favourite musicians, especially the four mentioned are because of their human element. Music being the career I want to follow, I don't want to sell anything of myself. Honesty and raw human emotion is what I like in my music, hence, from my point of view, my love of Lennon, Dylan, Cobain, Elliott Smith. Technically you can be amazing, but if you have no soul you may aswell be dead.

Currently I'm listening to:

Plastic Ono Band - John Lennon
If you want punk this album from 1970 will piss all over the Clash, Sex Pistols etc.

The Very Best of Crosby, Stills and Nash.
Very very under-rated band.

Bird and the Bee.
My girlfriend bought this the other day. Very much in the same vain as Sia, from Zero 7, but a bit more light-hearted. It's growing on me.

I really can't stand SOAD, to me its like thrash the shit out of the guitar then have a quiet bit, then thrash again. In fact I don't really have a lot of time for Slipknot either and I despise Trivium, especially the fact they think they are brilliant becuase they play solo's.

Rock is crying out for a GnR or Old Metallica.

Mind you the new Marilyn manson CD is out soon, that should be interesting, I quite like some of his stuff.

Aint that the truth.

I've lost count of the number of bands over the past few years have been tagged with the moniker 'the new Guns N' Roses', a band named Bullets and Octane being the latest. And then I smile wryly to myself when I hear 'play the guitar as fast as you can, because that = good, apparently' bollocks, with random shouty vocals overlaid.

I'd love to hear a song comparable to November Rain or Right Next Door To Hell but they never come. A fair percentage of modern bands, within my musical realm, I just find piss-poor. Perhaps I expect too much.

--------

Also, Vin, I enjoyed both of your new tracks. I was aimlessly browsing your profile too, and that Kiara Bianco intrigued me too.

Too right, I recon it's coming. With the whole electro 'Klaxons' thing going on, its only right that someone in a pair of hotpants and a leather jacket takes over. (my slash like guitaring is availible for auditions if wanted...)

Yeah, and like The Beatles were original

Come Together - the first two lines are nicked from Chuck Berry's "You Can't Catch Me"
The Inner Light - Indian music
I Feel Fine - Bobby Parker
Twist And Shout - Isley Brothers
My Sweet Lord - Enough said !

And so on...

http://www.guardian.co.uk/thebeatles/st ... 11,00.html

And as for the later albums, the true genius was George Martin, the Beatles were so stoned....cue Bill Hicks...etc

For truly original music producing artists from the late 60s (as opposed to those who just built on their influences) I would nominate CAN and Captain Beefheart....but then I would.

Has there ever ben a more original album than 'Trout Mask Replica' ?.

John Peel : "If there has ever been such a thing as a genius in the history of popular music, it's Beefheart…I heard echoes of his music in some of the records I listened to last week and I'll hear more echoes in records that I listen to this week."
