Wenger - Campbell's a gamble worth taking
http://www.arsenal.com/news/news-archiv ... rth-taking

Arsène Wenger believes Joel Campbell is "a gamble worth taking". Arsenal have agreed terms with Deportivo Saprissa for the sale of the Costa Rican striker who impressed at the recent Copa America and the Under-20 World Cup. Campbell could become Arsenal's fourth summer signing after Gervinho, Carl Jenkinson and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Wenger rates the 19-year-old highly.

"Joel is a young prospect, he has talent and he can play right, left or centrally," he told the Official Matchday Programme. "We took a gamble on him but, from what we have seen, it is worth taking. Campbell could join the Club, Gervinho has joined the Club, Carl Jenkinson and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain have joined the Club and people forget that. You can see that Gervinho has had a big impact as well. Sometimes you feel the reputation of the player is punished by the fact he did not have a massive transfer fee. You would like people to look just at the quality of the players and feel if they are Arsenal players or not."

Its great to have 3 young players that can play across the pitch providing back up when needed. Cambell up top, Chamberlain in the middle and jenkinson at the back. Sure they'll all need a year to adapt but that kind of flexibility in the back up players could get us out of jail a few times this season, well it already did in the Champions league qualifier.

Campbell, 19, who joins the Gunners fresh from representing Costa Rica at the U-20 World Cup in Colombia, is also a regular with his senior national team. Everyone at Arsenal Football Club would like to welcome the young striker to the Club and look forward to his contributions to the team.

That is a bloody joke. Man utd easily get WP for their players and we always get turned down. He is a full international FFS.

Why ? He has played 6 times for Costa Rica. Normally, you would have to have played at least 75% of your country's last 16 games to qualify without difficulty or appeal. He only made his international debut in June.

I'm not sure which Man Utd players you refer to, perhaps you would like to furnish us with them.

How did Hernandez get his one? i'm sure he was pretty much in the same situation in terms of internatioinal status when he signed for united?

After checking Mexico's schedule for 2009 and 2010 (and Wikipedia to check when he was signed by Man U and when he debuted for Mexico), Hernandez could have played at most 5 games for Mexico, in the senior team anyways.

That said, we were able to get Miyachi's permit and he hasn't played much for Japan, correct? I think we just have to chalk this up to winning some and loosing some.

There also is a rule about the country you represent, if it is in the top section of international teams your record counts and you get a WP, if not, you could have played 100% of games, but no WP.

To be honest I knew all the way he wasn't going to have that special talent permit granted, given he's from Costa Rica.

Also the same for Tosic and Ljandra (?) if that was his name. But agree, most balance themselves out. We had special permit for Song as well as Miyachi.

I don't know abut Herndez's reputation at the time but both Tosic and Ljajić were two of the most highly regarded youths in the talented Serbia national youth sides at the time. Serbia was expected to be a rising footballing nation with their young talent so can see how they could get work permits.

It's not a big deal that he doesn't get a permit this year anyhow, Campbell was signed for the future and not for the present so him going out on loan for a bit was always the likely scenario.

Once again we've managed to line up a pretty good loan destination in Holland for one of our players, it'll be interesting to see how he gets on over there at a club like PSV and should he do well in the Eredivisie then it's only going to make it more likely that Campbell will be able to secure a UK permit in the same way that young Miyaichi has been able to this year.

By the way, are PSV in European competition this year? Because Campbell getting any kind of experience in the CL or the Euro cup as well as the Eredivisie would be marvellous.

PSV just signed Matavz from Groningen.
Campbell is likely to join Lorient for this season.
